Southwestern Home

These paintings  are from my surroundings in Arizona, which I am enthusiastically exploring .The arid landscape; a big change from the greens I know so well, means a very focused approach to capturing the earth colors and dazzling light. Although I've done a lot of plein air painting, I knew I would have to go out more, in order to " get it".
As I've been exploring, I'm delighted to make new discoveries about the varied terrain.I'm having a blast enjoying the brilliant light, colorful shadows, and beautiful greys.

Gardens, Orchards & Vineyards

Gardens, Orchards & Vineyards

Gardens provide a delightful excuse to use vibrant color in the landscape; the array of shapes, texture, and the riot of hues beg to be painted. There is sometimes a geometric order imposed on the landscape,  particularly evident in orchards and vineyards which is an ongoing, beloved subject for me.I was born, raised, and lived many years in the Hudson Valley region of New York State, an area known for apples.
When I moved to Arizona, I was delighted to learn of the historic orchards here, and am very excited about the state's burgeoning wine industry. There are also a few pasture areas...the cattle fit in to the agricultural theme. For good measure, there are some indoor florals, painted from life. They help keep me honest!

Pure Plein Air

Pure Plein Air

I have always believed very strongly that the practice of painting " en plein air" is essential for landscape work. Although much of my work is created from a combination of on site studies ,reference photos and life sketches, I regularly go out to paint. This collection is of works that were done completely on location. There are also several plein air pieces scattered throughout the other collections, but here are some of my favorites.

The Pure Landscape & Waterways

The Pure Landscape & Waterways

Early in my career, most of my work lacked the human presence. I have continued this practice for some work, although these days it's more about the light, than a sense of place. I have also painted many close-up stream banks, which I always found mesmerisingly peaceful.

Streets, Cars, & Corners

Streets, Cars, & Corners

After having the wonderful opportunity to travel to Europe several times, street scenes and architectural motifs became part of my work, and also influenced my subject choices here in the US.

Backyards, streets, corners ...all in an array as individual as the people that inhabit them... are intimate glimpses in to everyday life.

Prints, Posters and Giclees

Prints, Posters and Giclees

For the first time, I have reproduced a few images as giclee prints.

Giclee ( zhhee-clay) is derived a french word that means " sprayed ink".

This fine art process allows me to share some favorite pieces among many collectors, and are reproduced one at a time. The process utilizes pigment derived inks, and very high quality paper. I have the images printed on 11x14 paper, with a small white border all around, which I have signed at the bottom.

In addition, Winn Devon company has published images as posters for the past several years. The new ones are quite large, and make a nice impact.
